What to consider when comparing file sync and share solutions

Here’s a list of questions that will help you differentiate between different file sync and share offerings:

  • Does is have the basic ability to sync files across multiple devices?
  • Can it keep master copy of those files in a secure cloud?
  • Is it able to work across all platforms with a native application? (Windows, Mac OS X, Android, iOS, etc.)
  • Will it keep previous versions of files for a certain amount of time?
  • Are you able to share links to files with other people?
  • Can you share secure links (track and revoke shares as needed)?
  • Will external users (those without their own account) be able to upload files to folders?
  • Are you able to restrict access to files and folders?
  • Are there audit capabilities for files and folders?
  • Can you integrate with files on your file server?
  • Will the solution integrate with the same security settings as your file server?
  • Are you able to pause the sync process on PCs and Macs, and selectively sync certain directories?
  • Can the solution appear as a shared drive on your network?

Your best bet will be to place these features in a matrix, and to directly compare how each solution stacks up. Then it’s a matter of deciding which features top your priority list, and making your selections from there.
